چکیده

Manufacturing processes in which the desired product takes the form of individual particles are ubiquitous in the chemical, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Particulate processes often are modeled using a form of the population balance equation (PBE) which describes the evolution of the particle distribution. In many applications, control of the particle distribution is necessary to achieve the desired product properties. In this paper, a model predictive control strategy based on a discretized representation of a general onedimensional PBE is proposed for particle distribution control. The controller is formulated to minimize the least squares difference between the predicted and target distributions assuming the availability of particle distribution measurements. The proposed method is applied to the problem of cell mass distribution control in a continuous yeast fermentor.

Dynamic Simulation and Control of a Continuous Bioreactor Based on Cell Population Balance Model

Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast) can exhibit sustained oscillations during the operation in a continuous bioreactor that adversely affects its stability and productivity. Because of heterogeneous nature of cell populations, the cell population balance equation (PBE) can be used to capture the dynamic behavior of such cultures. In this work, an unstructured-segregated model is used f...

Population Balance Equation: a Tool for Dynamic Modeling of Particulate Processes

Particulate processes are often encountered in industry. The polydispersity of some key properties characterizes particulate processes and makes them ill-suited to be modeled within the framework of conventional conservation equations only. In the mid 60s a tool called Population Balance Equation was developed to quantify the dynamics of particulate processes. This paper aims to give an introdu...

An Inverse Problem Approach to Extract the Growth Kernel in Particulate Processes

Mathematical models of particulate processes usually include a population balance equation to describe the dynamics of the size distribution. The structure of the population balance equation is the same in all models of particulate processes and the specific physical and chemical interaction of the particles is described by individual kernels. Usually first principles modeling is used to develo...

Population Balance Equation Modeling of Crude Oil Demulsification Considering Demulsifier: Modification of Collision Frequency Function Based on Thermodynamic Model

A theoretical model is developed to consider the effect of demulsifier agent on demulsification of water-in-crude oil emulsion. A thermodynamic approach is considered to correlate the critical micelle concentration of a demulsifier to the collision frequency function in population balance equation (PBE). Based on the proposed correlation, the collision frequency function is modified to account ...

Solution of the Bi-Variate Dynamic Population Balance Equation in Batch Particulate Systems

This paper presents a comparative study on the application of different numerical methods for the solution of the dynamic bi-variate population balance equation (PBE) in batch particulate systems. Specifically, particulate processes operating under the combined action of particle aggregation and/or particle growth are examined. In order to solve the bi-variate PBE the Galerkin finite element me...
